Shortage of Nursing Staff

The shortage of nursing staff across the board is a major concern for hospitals because it influences patient safety and quality of care. Some adverse patient outcomes related to nursing-sensitive indicators include urinary tract infections (UTIs), pneumonia, shock, upper gastrointestinal bleeding, longer hospital stays, failure to rescue, and 30-day mortality. The current nursing shortage is a result of fundamental changes to population demographics, career expectations, work attitudes, and worker dissatisfaction. Although some hospitals provide continuous educational opportunities for nurses, others do not.19 A federal government study predicts that hospital nursing vacancies will reach 29 percent by 2020. The number of nurses is expected to grow by only 6 percent by 2020, while demand for nursing care is expected to grow by 40 percent.20 The annual nursing staff turnover rate averages about 18 percent.21
